THE POWER OF EMBRACING TRUE BEAUTY
By: Jannah Marie Detoyato
From high school to college, there were many unkind words said about her by her classmates, friends, and other people, such as "not beautiful" or "pretty", "too dramatic", "very bossy", "not good at dressing up”, "skinny", "attention-seeker", "too competitive", and many more. Even their random jokes about her physical appearance and her personality could literally affect her, to the point that she overthought it for how many days, nights, and weeks. Whenever she heard those words, she could do nothing but remain silent and cry over the pain she feels every night. There are times when this has already damaged her mental health and affect self-esteem, to the point that she don’t want to go to school anymore. Feeling the shame and fear of hearing it again makes her feel queasy when she sees the judgment and displeased expressions on their faces. There are the times when she questioned God, asking why she couldn't have been beautiful like other beautiful women, thinking maybe if she were, people would admire her too. No matter what Jannah did, whether it's good or bad, she continued to hear many unkind words from other people. And the most painful part is those people she trusts the most are the one who talk behind her back. Eventually, she just got tired of hearing those judgement and just ignored it, but one day came when she felt like it was really too much for her to endure the emotional pain and things went too far, that’s her wake up call to fight for her self and her dignity. She take a legal action for them to stop it.
In the face of the criticism and judgement that she faced, she may have been weak but in the end she learned to fight back for her self. She became strong and proved to those who mocked her that they were wrong. She worked hard on her studies to show to those people that even if she’s not beautiful, easy judged by many people and faced various insults, she was still doing her best to become an academic achiever and had something to offer and proved. Jannah realized that she may not be as beautiful as other people, but she has her own beauty both physically and internally. And no matter what her personality is, there are still people who love and accept her for who and what she is, especially her family who always supports her. Indeed, Jannah is a brave and fearless woman for her to face those judgements and insults. She learn to stands up for herself against judgement and bullying.
To those people who are experiencing what Jannah went through, it doesn't matter what others think, it matters what you think to yourself. Just always remember that we all have a unique beauty and personality, and remind yourself that everyone is different. Distance yourself from the people who always bring you down and stop entertaining such negative comments of others about you because people who judge others based on their personality and appearance often project their own insecurities. And remember this quote: “Better to have an enemy who slaps you in the face than a friend who stabs you in the back". Not all of our friends are trustworthy, there are times that they are the ones who bring you down. So its better to trust yourself more than trust anyone. Jannah is not writing her story to aim the sympathy of others but to inspire them. No matter what other people will say, don’t mind them and don’t let it affect you, just be yourself. Remember that you are beautiful just as you are, and you can stand out for your own beauty.
