EXPLORE THE UNKNOWN : CALUYA

Nestled between Panay and Mindoro, off the northwest corner of Antique Province, lies a series of islands known as Caluya—a remote and pristine tropical paradise. For sun worshippers who wish to enjoy island living away from concrete jungles, it's the ideal retreat. Caluya boasts an abundance of natural resources, a diverse array of marine life, immaculate white sand beaches, unending vistas of pristine waterways, and hospitable residents. The islands are also well-known for their vast seaweed farms and highly sought-after "Tatus," or coconut crabs—giant crabs that scale coconut trees and crack open their husks to reveal the meat inside. The main island of Caluya, Sibato, and Sibolo have the nicest beaches. Liwagao, Nagubat, Semirara, Sibay, Panangatan l, ll, lll are some of the other islands. Caluya is a secluded, pristine tropical paradise.

Your journey begins with a boat ride. This is a place to go if you want to get away from tourist crowds. The only thing holding back this place from being visited is the accessibility. You need to take a 4hours ride of Bus/ Van to the port of Libertad or a private car ride from caticlan to the small port in Libertad to take the 3/4 hours ferry ride to Caluya island. (Only two ferry company servicing the route. ArgoFerry shipping Inc. and MV Saint Augustine De Ubon And the ferry leaves at 3am). Also the municipality is only accessible from march to july, the rest of the year the sea can get very rough.

The town proper of Caluya is quit small. It is advisable also to stay at the houses of locals instead of the inns available on the island. Most locals rent out an aircon room for only 500 pesos per night. The beach is just less than 5 mins walk from the municipal hall. (Fine powdery sand to rival that of Boracay)

Before you visit the island it is best to contact the municipal tourism office since they are the only ones who can arrange for your island hopping and guides. (Cant rent a banka because no tourists visits the island yet so the infrastructure is not in place yet). Make sure to ask about the price for everything from the boat, guides and lunch on several of the islands. (There are 4 islands worth visiting...namely Sibay, sibolo, panagatan and sibato).

As you approach the island, the crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches greet you. The shoreline is a mix of soft white sand and rocky outcrops, creating a stunning contrast. The sea here is incredibly clear, revealing colorful coral reefs and lively fish just beneath the surface.

Once you step onto the island, you’ll notice the peaceful vibe. The local people are friendly and welcoming, and their lives are closely tied to the sea. They’ll likely share stories and traditions that have been passed down through generations, giving you a glimpse into their daily life.

Exploring the island, you’ll find rolling green hills and dense tropical vegetation. There are some trails that lead to beautiful viewpoints where you can take in the sweeping views of the ocean.

The island's charm extends to its local culture. Festivals and traditional ceremonies are a big part of life here (just like TATUSAN FESTIVAL that celebrated in the Month of April ) If you’re around during one of these events, you’ll get to experience local music, dances, and customs that make the island’s heritage so rich.

As night falls, the sky lights up with stars, and the sound of the waves creates a soothing backdrop. A bonfire on the beach is a perfect way to end the day, (specially in Sibato Island in Island Tourist Inn. Resort )

One important thing is to bring cash. No credit card facilities on the island and no bank. Only one ATM on the island. (Located at Palawan Pawnshop). And getting stranded is a very distinct possibility. Other than that the island is worth visiting if your into nature. They have a dive resort operated by 2 swiss guys. (Island divers caluya. You can see whale sharks, dolphins and sea cow here). Locals are really friendly. Complete strangers will greet you as you walk down the street. No pollution also.

Caluya Island is a special place where you can disconnect from the busy world and reconnect with nature and local culture. It’s a tranquil escape that feels like a true getaway from everyday life.
